Malawi at the United Nations Human Settlements Programme

Malawi is a member of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN Habitat), an entity of the United Nations established in 1975 and headquartered in Nairobi. UN Habitat is the leading global authority and voice on matters of human settlements and urbanisation, working to promote transformative change in cities and human settlements through knowledge, policy advice, technical assistance and collaborative action. Following major changes in its governance system, UN Habitat moved from a limited Governing Council format to a universal one, with three key structures; UN Habitat Assembly, Executive Board and Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR). As such Malawi, through the ministry responsible for urbanisation and human settlements participates in UN Habitat Assemblies, held once every four years. The mission prepares for, facilitates and is part of the Malawi delegation to the Assemblies. During the inter-sessional period of the Assemblies, the Mission represents Malawi and negotiates on its behalf during sessions of UN Habitat's Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR). In instances where Malawi is elected into the Board of UN Habitat, the mission's role is to represent and negotiate on behalf of both Malawi and the African region. The mission is actively involved in following up with UN Habitat Secretariat, on various policies, programmes and projects that have a bearing on Malawi. Further information regarding the mandate and activities of UN Habitat is found here.
